February 24, 2021 | Kenji Lots of good news and updates from JTNP during this busy climbing season. Here’s the scoop- CAMPGROUNDS are now open again, after the lockdown order was lifted last month. Most are reservation only, with the exception of Hidden Valley, Belle and White Tank Campgrounds. Visit www.recreation.gov for reservations. MASKS – Though the stipulation from Department of Interior is to wear a mask at all times in/on all federal properties and that includes inside all National Parks, it will be managed that way for indoor gatherings (like the JTNP HQ offices and visitors center). Outdoors, masking is required when social distancing cannot be maintained reliably (for example huddled under an overhang when it’s raining, or lined up to try Big Mo). RAPTOR CLOSURES BEGIN to protect nesting pairs of Prairie Falcons at Little Hunk and Snickers (just East of Echo Cove). This closure is from February 18- June 15 or the nest is abandoned. This is classified as an ’emergency closure’ although this area is regularly used by nesting raptors each spring. Raptors are important predator species in the Park and contribute to the balanced natural ecosystem of the high desert. Let’s give ’em some space.
