in 2025, the EXPLORE Act and PARC Act (Protect America’s Rock Climbing) were passed by Congress. This legislation codified rock climbing and fixed anchors as an appropriate use of wilderness lands and clarified the need for federal agencies to manage accordingly.
Passing EXPLORE was a landmark event for climbers nationwide; now an even more important phase begins, and this is where your voice comes in; Help the federal land management agencies hear what is crucial for you as a climber in effective climbing management policy. There is a 60-day open comment period NOW for feedback on the draft policies; and though the proposals recognize key elements of good policy, there are important clarifications and improvements that can eliminate fuzzy or subjective assessments and actions in the future.
“America’s public lands offer a wide range of exceptional climbing experiences. When climbing in Wilderness areas, climbers need to exercise restraint and low-impact practices to maintain the character of the land, and ensure that future generations have the opportunity to experience these wild spaces.” said Heather Thorne, Executive Director of Access Fund. “The draft climbing management guidance can be improved, but the spirit of the policies protects America’s climbing legacy, and the spirit of adventure.”
