Friends of Joshua Tree (FoJT) would like to inform the climbing community that we have started a paid rebolting/route maintenance program for Joshua Tree National Park. We recently had a successful first rebolting day, replacing 13 bolts at a popular area in the Park.
We would like to thank and acknowledge the previous volunteer work of Kevin Powell, Mark Wagner, and others with the Joshua Tree Bolt Replacement Project. They have replaced 1888 bolts over the last ten years, developing state-of-the-art techniques and tools to facilitate that process. Going forward, we believe that a paid program is needed to fully support the route maintenance needs within the Park, both inside and outside of designated wilderness areas.
We would also like to thank Access Fund, Salt Lake Climbers Alliance, and several individuals who provided invaluable support in making our program a reality.
Finally, we remind the climbing community that rebolting within Joshua Tree National Park requires formal approval through a lengthy special use permit process. We ask climbers to submit evidence of bad bolts through our Fixed Anchor Observation Form. We also ask climbers to consider supporting FoJT as we scale our rebolting program.
